RTG Brings IPTV Infrastructure to Major University Hospital in Southwestern US
Project Overview
Faced with outdated TV infrastructure, high cable bills, and an expanding campus, a large university hospital located in the Southwestern United States sought RTG’s help. We provided the hospital with a modern, hybrid solution that included a full digital HDTV upgrade, IPTV, and digital signage—with plenty of scalability for future growth.
RTG’s Impact
- Immediately Reduced the Hospital’s Monthly Cable Bill by 50%
- Provided $48,000 in annual savings, allowing the new system to pay for itself in just one year
- Increased Employee and Patient Satisfaction
Project Background
As a major healthcare provider in the Southwest, this 550-bed legacy hospital was struggling to manage its outdated cable infrastructure on its own (especially since the cable provider wasn’t helping). This led to poor TV signal quality and lower patient satisfaction. On top of this, the hospital was adding a new 500,000 sq. ft. tower to the campus and had no plans for its cable infrastructure at the time. At RTG, we conducted a full infrastructure assessment of the campus, pointing out current deficiencies and recommending system-wide upgrades
Full Digital & IPTV Upgrades
Our goal at RTG was to meet the hospital’s unique needs, considering their legacy campus and new tower addition. We recommended a dual hybrid DIRECTV headend that could address both areas in one integrated system. The legacy campus received a full digital and HDTV signal upgrade while still keeping its current coaxial infrastructure, while IPTV would be delivered to the new tower.
Because these upgrades allowed the facility to transition away from local cable, they cut their monthly cable bill in half immediately. This led to annual cost savings of $48,000 that helped the hospital recover the cost of their new system within the year.

Standardizing Communications with Digital Signage
With news of the IPTV upgrade, the facility’s marketing team sought our help to improve its communications through digital signage. We installed 37 digital signage displays throughout the legacy campus all under the same integrated system, which the hospital paid for with its cable savings. This upgrade helped the facility standardize its marketing and communications across the campus.
Enhancing Employee and Patient Wellness
With new IPTV infrastructure in place, the facility created an immersive decompression room to enhance employee wellness, utilizing a 4K projector to display relaxing visuals and sounds. At the same time, IPTV provided an improved TV signal, and provided a more robust channel lineup for the facility’s patients, leading to better overall patient satisfaction scores.
Future-Proofing for Growth
Our system upgrade provided the hospital with much-needed flexibility for future growth and expansion. In fact, our system was able to seamlessly integrate shortly thereafter with a new behavioral health facility on campus. Rather than needing major infrastructure overhauls in the future, the hospital’s system was designed with scalability and further integration in mind.
